Ghana Calls for Global Protection of Telecom Infrastructure

Ghana has urged the international community to recognize and protect telecommunications infrastructure as critical during times of conflict, similar to hospitals and schools. Speaking at the International Telecommunication Union conference in Geneva, Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, stressed the essential role telecom systems play in modern life. He explained that telecommunications infrastructure supports key services such as healthcare, education, and emergency response, warning that any disruption can severely affect society. According to the Minister, attacks on telecom networks can trigger widespread consequences, weakening hospitals, schools, and overall national stability. He therefore called on the ITU to take a strong and proactive global stance, pushing for telecom infrastructure to be formally recognized under international protection frameworks. Referencing ongoing tensions in the Gulf region, he noted that the issue goes beyond regional conflicts and requires a coordinated global response. Ghana reaffirmed its support for international efforts to address rising security threats, emphasizing that protecting telecom systems is crucial for safeguarding civilians and maintaining essential services. The Minister concluded by calling for urgent global action to recognize telecommunications infrastructure as vital to human security and national resilience.
